KANHANGAD MUNICIPALITY  at a glance

Kanhangad is one of the major towns and municipalities in Kasaragod district. It is located 28 kilometres south of Kasaragod town. The Municipal Office, other administrative buildings, Police Station, Court, and Government Hospital are situated at Puthiyakotta, about half a kilometre south of the town centre, Kottachery. The name “Puthiyakotta” originated from the Kannada word “Hosdurg,” which means “new fort.”
On 1 June 1984, Kanhangad, which had been a Special Grade Panchayat until then, was officially declared a Municipality. Until 1988, the administration was managed by a Special Officer. Elections were later conducted, and on 8 February 1988, the first elected Municipal Council assumed office under the leadership of Chairperson K.M. Shamsudheen.
